This chest was made in the mid Meiji era (1868 1912) of red lacquered chestnut front and sugi (cryptomeria) interiors. Ishodansu were used to store precious kimono, obi and accessories. It features the distinctive hardware of tansu made in the Yonezawa region. This tansu chest is made with pegged tenon open mortise corner box joint construction.
