Some of them may have been inspired by the actual setup of the La Californie studio. However, these balcony views were also reminiscent of the work of Henri Matisse, who had been Picasso's friend and rival for over half a century. Matisse's death in 1954 had a profound effect on Picasso. Indeed, the balcony views can be read as a tribute to the older
