Born in 1917, Monk began playing in New York City and helped usher in the bebop style that would dominate jazz for the rest of the century. Monk would go on to record with such labels as Blue Note, Prestige, Columbia, and more. Thelonious Monk is the second most recorded jazz artist ever, coming in only behind the great Duke Ellington.
