He began fighting professionally in 1992 after a very successful amateur career that included wins at the U. S. National Championships and the Goodwill Games. In 1996, De La Hoya took on Julio Csar Chvez for the WBC Welterweight title. Chvez had an impressive record of 96 1 1, but De La Hoya won with a TKO in the fourth round. De la Hoya would go on fighting for over a decade, ending his career with a
